Advanced String Quartet

The Advanced String Quartet is an audition-based program for dedicated young string players who are ready for a challenge. Members work on chamber arrangements of iconic film scores, blending the precision of classical quartet playing with the excitement of cinematic music.

This program is designed for advanced students who want to refine their ensemble skills, push their artistry, and experience the thrill of bringing movie music to life in an intimate, high-level setting.

Film Composing Lesson

Our Film Scoring Lesson introduces students to the art of writing music for the screen. Young musicians learn how to match sound to story while exploring melody, harmony, and texture in ways that bring scenes to life.

Lessons cover how to create moods, build tension, and support emotion, using examples from well-known film scores alongside original student work. With guidance, students begin crafting their own short cues, discovering how music and picture work hand in hand.

This program is perfect for students who are curious about composition, love movies, or want to expand their creative voice beyond performance.

Private Lessons

Private Lessons are offered as a way to support each student’s journey within Cinematic Youth Orchestra. These one-on-one sessions give players the chance to strengthen their technique, polish their orchestra parts, and build confidence in their individual playing.

Lessons are tailored to each student’s needs whether that’s mastering tricky passages from the orchestra repertoire, developing tone and control, or exploring musical expression more deeply. By pairing personal attention with the excitement of ensemble playing, students grow faster and feel more prepared for rehearsals and performances.

Who we are

Cinematic Youth Orchestra brings young musicians together to explore the power and excitement of cinematic music. Our ensemble blends classical training with the thrill of performing scores inspired by film, television, and beyond.

We believe orchestral playing should feel both rigorous and joyful. Students gain strong ensemble skills, deepen their musicality, and experience the teamwork that comes from shaping bold, immersive sound worlds together.

The program was created by Danielle Merlis, founder of The Cello Camp and A Cappella Central. In addition to her work as a professional cellist and award-winning composer with hundreds of television placements, Danielle is a dedicated strings teacher with years of experience mentoring young musicians. Cinematic Youth Orchestra brings together her two greatest loves: film music and orchestral playing. The result is a program rooted in both storytelling and strong musicianship.

Based in Fairfield County, we welcome musicians who are ready to grow, connect, and perform in a vibrant, supportive community. Our concerts are designed to inspire both performers and audiences, reminding everyone how moving and unforgettable orchestral music can be.
